Over 3,900 people in Purworejo district of Indonesia’s Central Java province have been evacuated due to floods and landslides caused by seasonal downpours, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported.

The overflowing Bogowonto River and its tributaries inundated the villages in the region, said Head of Data and Information Centre of BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Flood and landslides struck 53 villages in 11 sub-districts of Purworejo on December 20, killing four residents and cut off many roads.

The local administration has issued an emergency in response to the floods and landslides in Purworejo as the peak of rainy season is predicted to occur around January-February 2014.-VNA
