Floods displaces thousands in Indonesia

Over 3,900 people in Purworejo district of Indonesia’s Central Java province have been evacuated due to floods and landslides caused by seasonal downpours, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported.

The overflowing Bogowonto River and itstributaries inundated the villages in the region, said Head of Data andInformation Centre of BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Flood andlandslides struck 53 villages in 11 sub-districts of Purworejo onDecember 20, killing four residents and cut off many roads.

Thelocal administration has issued an emergency in response to the floodsand landslides in Purworejo as the peak of rainy season is predicted tooccur around January-February 2014.-VNA
