Foreign debt of Indonesia increases in May

Foreign debt of Indonesia rose 5.5 percent year-on-year to 333.6 billion USD in May while public debt increased 11.8 percent to 168.4 billion USD, reported the Central Bank of Indonesia (BI).

Jakarta (VNA) – Foreign debt of Indonesia rose 5.5 percent year-on-year to 333.6 billion USD in May while public debt increased 11.8 percent to 168.4 billion USD, reported the Central Bank of Indonesia (BI).

In an official statement on statistics of foreign debt, the BI said public debt accounts for 50.5 percent of Indonesia’s total foreign debt.

Meanwhile, in the same month, private sector debt dropped 0.1 percent compared to the same period last year to 165.2 billion USD, or 49.5 percent of the country’s foreign debt. The decline was slower than that in April, when private sector debt decreased 3.2 percent year-on-year. According to the BI’s statistics, foreign debt of the private sector is mainly of financial organisations.

The BI said though foreign debt increased last May, it remains stable. The bank affirmed that it will continue to monitor the trend of foreign debt, especially in private sector.-VNA
