China and France have signed a series of cooperation deals worth a total 6.3 billion EUR (9 billion USD) in the fields of aviation, energy and water supplies.

The deals were signed on Dec. 21 during a three-day visit to China by French Prime Minister Francois Fillon, his first official visit to the country since he took office in May, 2007.

During talks earlier the day, the Chinese Premier stressed that China and France needed to pursue an open door policy, shun protectionism and boost bilateral trade.

French PM Fillon said that cooperation between the two countries in energy reflected their attitude to protecting the environment and combating climate change.

During his stay in China, PM Fillon met with President Hu Jintao and parliamentary speaker Wu Bangguo. He will finish his visit on Dec. 22.

Figures show that the value of two way trade between China and France has dropped considerably since the third quarter of last year with a strong decline in Chinese exports to France . In the first three quarters of this year, two way trade plunged 15.6 percent year-on-year to 24.6 billion USD, a record low since 1996.

France is currently China’s fourth largest trading partner and there are currently nearly 2,000 French companies doing business in the country./.
