Hanoi forum discusses global political, economic impacts of COVID-19

The Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) hosted a forum on December 18 in Hanoi on the COVID-19 pandemic and its political and economic impacts on the world and different regions.

Hanoi (VNA) - The Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) hosted a forum onDecember 18 in Hanoi on the COVID-19 pandemic and its political and economicimpacts on the world and different regions.

The forum gatheredtogether nearly 400 delegates, including researchers, business leaders,policymakers, and representatives from a range of institutes, universities, andinternational organisations.

Addressing theforum, Dr. Dang Xuan Thanh, VASS Vice President, said the forumfocused discussions on global political, economic, security, and diplomaticaffairs and international relations, and the impacts of the pandemic on severalregions, such as Europe, Southeast Asia, and Africa, and countries like the US,Japan, China, and the Republic of Korea. It will also hear internationalexperience in responding to the coronavirus and how Vietnam reacted to changes inthe pre- and post-pandemic world.

AssociateProfessor Dr. Cu Chi Loi from VASS’s Vietnam Institute of Americas Studies, said that,from a political perspective, COVID-19 has resulted in a world of contrast,with a number of countries enjoying advantageous positions while others arestill struggling.

From an economicperspective, COVID-19 is wreaking havoc on the US and EU economies, he said,adding that the US economy experienced a 32 percent contraction in the secondquarter of this year, while China suffered less. The world has entered a newperiod of uncertainty, with increasing international tensions disrupting cooperationfor development.

Many countriesare therefore adopting a more deliberate and flexible approach to internationalrelations, he added.

Associate ProfessorDr. Nguyen An Ha from VASS’s Vietnam Institute of European Studies said the EU hascalled upon member states to unite and develop a common strategy to tackleCOVID-19, which includes a set of solutions and initiatives in the short,medium, and long terms.

Delegates also passedcomments on Vietnam’s post-pandemic socio-economic development policies between2021 and 2030./.

Vietnamese, Chinese cities to build smart border gate pair

They also consented to promote the development of a cross-border economic cooperation zone through sectoral cooperation at Hai Yen industrial park, Van Ninh international port in Mong Cai; a cross-border e-commerce industrial park; and transport connectivity projects between the two cities including the international railway line from Mong Cai to Dongxing, Bac Luan III bridge, and an auxiliary rough steel bridge.

Fisherman receives emergency care at Song Tu Tay infirmary

A fisherman from central Quang Ngai province was given emergency treatment for severe respiratory distress at the Song Tu Tay island infirmary in the island district of Truong Sa, the south central coastal province of Khanh Hoa on March 11, after falling ill while fishing at sea.

Hanoi court begins trial for deadly apartment fire tragedy
