Hanoi receives real-time flood warning technology

Hanoi (VNA) - The National Centre for Hydro-MeteorologicalForecasting under the Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administrationand HydroScan Company of Belgium signed a cooperationagreement on the transfer of real-time flood forecast technology for Hanoi’s inner areas.

Prof. Dr. Tran Hong Thai, General Director of theVietnam Meteorology and Hydrological Administration, and Belgian Ambassador toVietnam Paul Jensen attended the signing ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Thai said this is a technicalassistance project using ODA funded by the Belgian Government with technicalsupport from the HydroScan Company from 2021 - 2024 to build real-time urban flooding prediction technology for Hanoi’sinner areas. The project aims at assisting Vietnam's meteorological and hydrological sector in effectively monitoring, warning andforecasting urban flooding.

Flood4cast® enablesflooding predictions based on real-time rain fall and existing flood map. Thetechnology operates on converting extreme rainfall and linking the mostrealistic flooding scenarios into corresponding alarm levels. Rainfall is alsoforecast for the next three hours. Therefore, corresponding future floodscenarios are also mapped during this period.

Forecasting and early warning about flood risks allowsauthorities to make better decisions and proactively take action in deployingrescue and intervention activities where they are most needed as well as timelynotification to people living in high-risk areas.

The proposed areas for the project implementation include 12districts with a total area of 306.64 km2, of which eight are inner districts -Hoan Kiem, Tay Ho, Ba Dinh, Hai Ba Trung, Dong Da, Thanh Xuan, Cau Giay andHoang Mai, which are the most heavily flooded areas of Hanoi./.

Three new plant species discovered in Nui Chua National Park

The newly discovered species are shrub-like smaller trees with floriferous branchlets called Sam cuong dai (Memecylon longipedunculatum), Diep ha chau Nui Chua (Nymphanthus adenophorus) and Long muc Nui Chua (Wrightia nuichuaensis). Their discovery was officially published in Phytotaxa, a leading international journal on plant taxonomy and biodiversity, on January 19, 2025.
