Hanoi (VNA) – The Hanoi Party’sCommittee is focusing on all necessary measures to address environmentalpollution – which is at an alarming level.

Secretary of the municipal Party’s CommitteeHoang Trung Hai made the statement at an online conference in Hanoi on June 23.

The investment in industrial parks and craftvillages is increasing; hence, it is necessary to strictly manage environmentalissues as soon as possible, he said.

He pointed to such environmental challenges aspoor sanitation infrastructure and climate change.

Given that, the Standing Board of the HanoiParty’s Committee promulgated Resolution No.11 – NQ/TW on May 31, 2017 on strengtheningenvironmental protection through 2020 and the following years.

He called for strong determination and drasticengagement of the whole political system to realise environmental protectiongoals.

Competent agencies and authorities wererequested to build plans to protect water resources and ensure effectivemanagement of toxic and solid wastes.

The resolution puts forth four major measures toprotect the city’s environment: improving the State management efficiency;prompting campaigns to raise public awareness of protecting the environment andnatural resources; intensifying inspections to promptly detect and strictlypunish violations; and mobilising financial resources to build environmentaltechnical infrastructure.

The conference also deliberated other issuessuch as granting land use right certificates and ensuring traffic safety andurban order.-VNA

According to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, approximately 1.8 million tonnes of plastic waste are generated in Vietnam every year, with between 0.28 - 0.73 million tonnes of this waste ending up in the oceans. The released animals include one Hatinh langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis), two Keeled box turtles (Cuora mouhotii), two Impressed tortoises (Manouria impressa), three Pygmy slow lorises (Nycticebus pygmaeus), one Big-headed turtle (Platysternon megacephalum), four Bourret’s box turtles (Cuora bourreti), and one Bengal monitor lizard (Varanus bengalensis).

Two new lizard species discovered in Vietnam

The discovery of these two new lizard species provides further evidence of Vietnam’s exceptional biodiversity, particularly in the Sop Cop Nature Reserve in Son La province, and the south-central coastal region. This also highlights Vietnam’s critical role as a global biodiversity hotspot for reptiles and amphibians in the Indochinese region.
