HCM City calls for US’s support to build start-up ecosystem

Washington, D.C., (VNA) – Secretaryof the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan has called on the USto facilitate cooperation between the city and US partners to establish astart-up ecosystem, promote innovation, and develop smart city project andinnovation centre in District 2, District 9 and Thu Duc district.

He made the appeal while meeting with UnderSecretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon and Senior Director forAsian Affairs at the National Security Council Matthew Pottinger on December 15as part of his ongoing visit to the US.

The US’s assistance in the fields is importantsince the National Assembly of Vietnam has approved a Resolution piloting theimplementation of particular mechanisms for HCM City’s development, Nhan said.

He described 2017 as a special year in theVietnam-US relations with the official visit to Vietnam by US President DonaldTrump on the occasion of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Da Nang city inNovember, which helped further bilateral cooperation.

Shannon noted that more than 20,000 Vietnamesestudents are learning in the US, which lays a crucial foundation for the twocountries to boost win-win cooperation in education and human resources.

He said the US will step up relations withVietnam in the coming time, especially in the fields of trade and investment.

The US Government will coordinate with Vietnamto address post-war consequences and carry out detoxification at Bien Hoaairport in southern Dong Nai province while considering assistance for theMekong Delta to cope with climate change, he added.

He also mentioned other cooperation programmesbetween the two countries, including the building of the Fulbright Universityin Vietnam.

For his part, Pottinger highly valueddetermination and efforts of HCM City in environmental protection and believedthe city will be a leading destination for US businesses in Vietnam.-VNA

Vietnam, Cambodia sign defence cooperation plan for 2027

Giang called on agencies and units of the two defence ministries to implement agreed cooperation programmes, focusing on political and ideological education to strengthen political trust, and cooperation between military services and arms. The two sides should step up coordination in border management and protection to build a Vietnam-Cambodia border of peace, cooperation and development.

Deputy PM visits China’s Tsinghua University, seeking closer educational cooperation

Tsinghua has worked to implement the Vietnamese and Chinese leaders’ orientations for higher education cooperation. Last year, it admitted 27 Vietnamese students and postgraduates, the highest number to date, all of whom received scholarships. The university also hosted the second Vietnam-China Higher Education Cooperation Forum, helping promote exchanges and cooperation between the two countries’ educational institutions.
