HCM City (VNA) –
The Vietnam Fatherland Front in Ho Chi Minh City on October 8 launched the month for the poor that will last from October 17 to November 18.

The campaign targets poor and near-poor households, and those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to completing the Government’s target of containing the epidemic and spurring socio-economic development.

In the month, the city expects to raise nearly 137 billion VND (5.9 million USD) in support of the poor, especially during the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.

According to To Thi Bich Chau, President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front in HCM City, over the past two decades, more than 2.32 trillion VND has been mobilised for the poor, helping to build over 30,200 houses and repair 7,325 others.

The city has also presented 500,000 scholarships to local students, and millions of gift packages to social policy beneficiaries, poor and near-poor households, and those in difficult circumstances.

These results have contributed to implementing the national target programmes on sustainable poverty reduction and new-style rural area building, she said.

On October 6, the People’s Committee of Hanoi also launched the Month for the Poor and Social Welfare in 2020 at a ceremony held at the Hanoi Opera./.
