A landslide covering 2,000 square metres of the Sai Gon riverbank took place late on the night of July 1, washing away two houses and a number local properties.

One of the houses belonged to Nguyen Dinh Quang, a resident of Thu Duc District’s Hiep Binh Phuoc Ward. Three family members were sleeping in the house when the landslide occurred but were fortunately rescued by nearby fishermen.

The landslide also swept away an excavator, a dump truck, a fence, 100 metres of the road near the river bank and a number of electric posts.

After receiving information on the landslide, authorities zoned off the area while evacuating local residents and their belongings to a safer place.

Local people said that landslides are common during monsoon season given the community’s close proximity to the Sai Gon River.

Three years ago, a similar landslip occurred in the area causing substantial damage to local livelihoods.-VNA
