Collecting waste on Bung Binh Canal in HCM City (Photo: VNA) HCM City (VNS/VNA) - The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has takenseveral steps to solve pollution in four canals in Thu Duc district and district9.
Vo VanHoan, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, asked theDepartment of Mineral Resources and Environment to work with the People’sCommittees of Thu Duc district and district 9 to inspect facilitiesthat illegally discharge waste water and to punish violators.
Businessesheadquartered in the two districts which discharge more than 1,000 cu.m ofwaste water were told to install automatic monitoring stations which send datato the department.
TheNational University in HCM City was asked to build a wastewater treatmentsystem for its Economic and Law faculties.
Thecity's Department of Mineral Resources and Environment also asked agenciesin Binh Duong province to inspect daily activities of householdsnear HCM City National University, including the discharge of wastewater and waste from pig and poultry breeders.
ThePeople’s Committee in District 9 was asked to supervise the implementationof regulations on environmental protection at breeding households,which must build their own waste water dredging systems.
Thecommittee was also asked to educate residents about the illegaldischarging of waste or untreated water into canals
All householdsliving along canals should sign waste-collection contracts withgarbage collectors according to laws and regulations, the committee said.
District9 authorities were also told to periodically supervise and monitor thesurface water environment in Binh Tho Canal Area.
The fourcanals in the two districts are Suoi Cai, Suoi Nhum, Binh Tho, and Xuan Truong.
Meanwhile,the HCM City Department of Construction has stepped up construction of threewaste water treatment plants, including the 65,000 cu.m Suoi Nhum Canal WasteWater Treatment station, the 170,000 cu.m North Sai Gon Station No 1, and anotherwastewater treatment facility with an output of 130,000 cu.m per day.
Thecity's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development asked the IrrigationService Management Ltd to dredge and collect waste, treat waterhyacinth and wild grass, and facilitate the flow of Suoi Nhum – Suoi Cai and XuanTruong canals, and collect waste and treat water hyacinth on Binh Tho Canal.-VNS/VNA
