
Hanoi (VNA) –Torrential rains on October 22 caused big damage to residents’ properties agricultureand infrastructure works in several communes in the northern mountainousprovinces of Lao Cai and Ha Giang.
According to the Office of theCentral Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, heavyrains measuring 100mm in Nghia Do commune, Lao Cai’s Bao Yen district, causedfloods sweeping nine houses away, inundating 87 other houses, more than 100 haof food crops.
Local authorities havedispatched rescue forces to help affected families move to safe areas.
Quang Binh district of Ha Giangreported rains of 60-90mm. Floods and landslides caused by rain claimed onelive and destroyed seven houses, while one is still missing.
Local police and civil defenceforce are searching for the missing victims and helping affected families dealwith the consequences.
More rain is forecast for thenorthern mountainous region on October 23 and 24 due to a coming cold wave. Theregion is also warned of high risks of flash floods and landslides.
The Office of the CentralSteering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control has requestedauthorities in northern localities to keep a close watch of the local weatherand take preventive measures against floods and landslides.-VNA
