Ho Chi Minh City deals with unemployment

The city will try and find jobs for 265,000 people to reduce the unemployment rate to 4.8 percent this year.

To date, the rate of unemployment in the city has remained at 4.9 percent.

In 2012, 289,000 jobs were created in the city, a year on year drop of 1.03 percent. In addition, the number of Vietnamese workers sent abroad fell by 1,000 to 5,900.

The unemployment ratio of the city increased by 33.6 percent compared to 2011 with 140,000 people registering their status.

The number of people living on unemployment benefits was 113,000, a 29 percent increase. Total cost of the benefits was over 857 billion VND.

The economic situation is the primary cause of increasing unemployment. Many companies have closed and workers have lost their jobs.

Nguyen Tan Dinh, Standing Deputy Director of the HCM City ’s Management Board of Industrial Parks and Export Processing, said 1,000 employees lost their jobs because company orders decreased.

Furthermore, the companies tend to hire young employees with special skills, he added.-VNA
