Crafts and folk arts are outstanding strengths of Hoi An and have been effectively preserved and promoted in recent times. On October 31, 2023, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network Secretariat named Hoi An as the next representative from Vietnam becoming an official member of the Network in terms of crafts and folk arts.

Hoi An ancient town in Quang Nam province has sent documentation to UNESCO on securing membership of the global creative city network. If approved, Hoi An would be the second city in Vietnam, following Hanoi, to join the network. Cities hoping to gain membership are expected to place creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans.

Two additional cities in Vietnam have been designated recently as UNESCO Creative Cities - Da Lat in the Central Highlands’ province of Lam Dong in term of music and Hoi An ancient town in the central province of Quang Nam in crafts and folk art. Vietnam now has three cities in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).
