Huge wild animal transport discovered in Quang Binh

An instance of large-scale illegal wildlife transport was discovered on September 29 in the central province of Quang Binh, according to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park’s ranger unit.

An instance of large-scale illegal wildlife transport was discovered on September 29 in the central province of Quang Binh, according to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park’s ranger unit.

At 4:30, a ranger team on patrol duty at the kilometre-22 section of Road No. 20, a strictly preserved area of the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, encountered two suspects.

When asked to be searched, they fled and left behind two backpacks carrying nine civets weighing nearly 21 kg. Two of them had died.

The remaining seven were sent to the National Park’s Centre for Animals Rescue, Conservation and Development to be cared for and eventually released back into the wild.

The trafficking of wildlife in to Vietnam has recently become more complicated than before, occurring concurrently on road and by sea and air, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, which cited the detection of four cases with seized items including 3,797 kg of ivory in August, 2015 alone.

In the first six months this year, customs officers uncovered four cases of illegal transport of rhino horns.

Since 2008, they have detected 23 cases of rhino horns smuggling, confiscating nearly 140 kilogrammes of rhino horns.-VNA
