Illegal shipment of ivory intercepted by customs

Hanoi Customs has confiscated more than 47 kilos of ivory tusk products and nearly eight kilos of synthetic drug illegally transported into Vietnam in two separate cases through express postal services.

- Hanoi Customs has confiscated more than 47 kilos of ivory tusk productsand nearly eight kilos of synthetic drug illegally transported into Vietnam intwo separate cases through express postal services.

The ivory tusks were seized on August 31 in twoparcels sent from Germany, weighing more than 60 kilos. Customs scanningindicated the goods may have been made from animals so were sent to theInstitute of Ecology and Biological Resources for tests. Tests releasedrecently showed that all the 47-kilos of the industrial goods were made fromivory.

Trading, storing and transporting ivory isforbidden in Vietnam. Violators can be fined from 5-50 million VND orimprisoned from six months to five years.

In the other cases, customs in cooperation withanti-smuggling and anti-drug police discovered a suspicious imported parcelweighing 12.14 kilos sent from the Netherlands to Hanoi and HCM City. Theeight-kilo goods were then tested positive with3.4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA).

The police then arrested two suspects in Hanoiand one in HCM City. The case in under further investigation.-VNA

OVs in Thailand preserve cultural legacy
