India to grant free visas to Myanmar citizens

New Delhi (VNA) – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on September 6 that New Delhi will grant free visas to Myanmar citizens wanting to visit the country. 

He made the announcement during a press conference with State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi after the two leaders held wide-ranging talks in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw.

Modi also said India has decided to release 40 Myanmar citizens who are imprisoned in India.

He expressed his belief that the two countries will work together to create a strong partnership.

During talks earlier, Modi said deepening the relationship with Myanmar is a priority for India, as a neighbour and also in the context of the “Act East Policy”.

According to the Indian Foreign Ministry, Myanmar and India signed 11 agreements and memoranda of understanding on strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in security and sharing of maritime data, supply of coastal supervision system, cultural exchange, medicine – pharmaceuticals, press and election, among others, during PM Modi's visit to Myanmar.
