Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam has obviously played an active role at the UN Security Council (UNSC), and successfully performed the task of the President of the council in two months, according to Ambassador T.S Tirumurti, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations (UN).

Speaking to a Vietnam News Agency correspondent in New York on the occasion of Vietnam's concluding its working term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC, the Indian diplomat held that in the past two years, Vietnam has prioritised a number of important issues, including the promotion of the resolution on protection of civilian infrastructure in armed conflicts.

Vietnam issued a presidential statement regarding bomb and mine issues, which is an important matter, especially when terrorist forces are targeting peacekeeping force, he underlined.

India and Vietnam have coordinated clesely at all levels, especially in 2021, he said, adding that the two sides worked together to reach agreements on the contents of many important documents such as resolutions and presidential statements.

Leaders of both sides have shown strong cooperation when discussing important issues in the UNSC agenda, he added.

Ambassador T.S Tirumurti noted that India engaged in the open discussion hosted by Vietnam on the partnership between the UN and regional organisations, during which India found that Vietnam, as an ASEAN member, brought important views to the UNSC, especially on the Myanmar issue.

India support all initiatives given by Vietnam at the UNSC, he stated.

Regarding challenges facing the UNSC in next year, the Indian diplomat held that the council will have much to do in the year, especially when urgent problems such as COVID-19 have still lingered, along with increased conflicts in the world and expanding terrorism./.
