Indonesia begins presidential election

Indonesians on July 9 began voting in the third direct presidential election since the country’s political reform that started in 1998. This is a race between former Jakarta governor Joko Widodo against former army general Prabowo Subianto.

More than 190 million people of the country’s total population of over 240 million are eligible to vote.

Locals on eastern remote islands casted their ballots at 8:am (local time), two hours earlier than those living in other regions of the country. There are 478,685 polling stations across the sprawling archipelago.

Earlier, more than 2 million expatriates voted at Indonesia’s 130 overseas representative agencies between July 4 and 6, said Husni Kamil Manik, Chairman of the Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU).

The KPU is expected to announce the final result of the election on July 21-22.-VNA
