In 2013, Indonesia met domestic demand for rice, corn and other farm produce, according to the country’s Ministry of Agriculture.
Addressing a symposium on food and agriculture on December 30, Agriculture Minister Suswono said Indonesia’s rice production reached 39.8 million tonnes while its rice consumption stood at 34.4 million tonnes in 2013.
Corn production touched 18.5 million tonnes and its consumption reached 14.3 million tonnes in the year, he added.
Besides rice and corn, other commodities recorded a production surplus such as onion at 84,000 tonnes, chilli at 187,900 tonnes, and poultry meat and eggs at 419,800 tonnes and 54,600 tonnes respectively.
Sugar production also satisfied domestic needs, and gained a surplus of 384,300 tonnes, with production of 3.03 million tonnes and consumption being 2.1 million tonnes.-VNA
