Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesia police said on May 6 that they had thwarted a scheme by an Islamic State (IS)-affiliated group to conduct suicide bombings on the day the presidential election results will be announced at the end of this month.

Seven alleged terrorists were arrested and another was killed by the police during raids last weekend in Bekasi, near Jakarta, and in Bitung in North Sulawesi province.

They were members of the Jemaah Anshurat Daulah (JAD) group, which has pledged allegiance to the IS and been accused of being behind a series of attack at churches in Surabaya in May 2018.

The group reportedly planned to set off bombs at various locations when election results are announced on May 22.

National police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo said the group aims to take advantage of chaos before and after the announcement and target a number of police stations.-VNA
