Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called on authorities to take stronger action against the smuggling of textile products into the country, describing it as a threat to Indonesia's sovereignty.
Addressing a conference in Jakarta on December 30, Prabowo said the smuggling of textiles threatens domestic industries and the livelihood of hundreds of thousands of Indonesian workers.
He highlighted that such illegal practices are committed not only by foreigners but also by Indonesians residing in the Southeast Asian country.
The smuggling poses a threat to Indonesia's sovereignty, he remarked, noting that it is necessary to grant special authority to responsible officers, enabling them to take stronger measures against smugglers.
The Government may resort to extreme measures, such as destroying ships used for smuggling, to serve as a deterrent, Prabowo added.
He also emphasised the importance of building a clean and trustworthy administration to safeguard sovereignty and protect citizens from the detrimental effects of illegal practices./.
