Jakarta (VNA) – Members of the Indonesian House of Representatives have required an inquiry into the corruption allegations around a project to procure electronic identification cards (e-ID).

According to the Jakarta Post, the move followed court revelations that several legislators may have involved in the case.

Deputy Speaker Fahri Hamzah of the Prosperous Justice Party said it was necessary “to clear the image of the legislative institution”, while House Deputy Speaker Agus Hermanto from the Democratic Party said that an inquiry could actually take place with support from a majority of lawmakers.

A recent trial on the e-ID corruption revealed a list of lawmakers who had allegedly received bribes to approve the project. The names include House Speaker Setya Novanto and about 40 members and former members of the House commission on home affairs.

The alleged corruption reportedly caused state losses worth 2.3 trillion IDR (172.25 million USD), with the budget allocated for the project reaching 5.9 trillion IDR (442.5 million USD).-VNA
