Tokyo (VNA) - Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu hasexpressed support for ASEAN’s decision to send a special envoy to Myanmar tohelp it address the current political crisis.
According to the Japanese Foreign Ministry, at a meetingwith his Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi on June 28, Motegi said thatJapan is seeking a dialogue with the military government of Myanmar.
They also agreed to maintain close cooperation in theMyanmar issue.
The two held talks on the fringes of a foreign ministerialmeeting of the Group of 20 major economies taking place on June 29.
Since the civilian government led by AungSan Suu Kyi was ousted on February 1, more than 800 people have been killed in clashesbetween protestors and the military in Myanmar.
In late April, leaders of the Association of Southeast AsianNations (ASEAN) member countries held a special meeting on the Myanmar crisis, and reached a"five-point consensus" including the need for an immediate end toviolence and the dispatch of an ASEAN special envoy to meet with “all partiesconcerned”./.
