Hanoi (VNA) - Rescuers in the Philippines on January 10 are racing to find dozens of people still missing following a landslide at a landfill site which occurred in Cebu city two days earlier.
Four people have been confirmed dead so far, while dozens of workers remain unaccounted for. Rescue operations have faced significant difficulties due to the massive volume of garbage. In addition, the overlying garbage continues to shift, posing serious risks to rescue personnel.
The collection of on-site information has also been hampered by communication outages in the landfill area. According to Cebu city’s authorities, as of 10:00 on January 10, 34 people were still missing. At least 12 workers have been rescued from the debris and are receiving treatment at hospital.
A city official warned that the risk of further landslides at the Binaliw landfill remains very high, particularly amid frequent rainfall in Cebu./.
