Vientiane (VNA) – The Lao Government has affirmed that the country still has sufficient fuel supplies to meet domestic demand, while urging the public to use fuel sparingly amid concerns that prolonged conflict in the Middle East could affect global supply.
Speaking at a press briefing on March 11, Sonexay Sitphaxay, spokesperson for the Lao Government, said national fuel supplies remain under control and that Laos currently maintains reserves sufficient for use over a certain period.
Fuel imports are continuing largely as normal, the official said. The government has already prepared emergency response measures covering the immediate 30-day period, as well as plans for the three- to 12-month horizon, which will be adjusted depending on developments.
Authorities will monitor the situation closely and introduce appropriate short-term measures in a timely and coordinated manner, he added.
At the same time, the government called on officials, security forces, and the general public to raise awareness about fuel conservation. Suggested measures include limiting the use of private vehicles, switching to public transport where possible, or adopting electric vehicles.
In the time to come, the Lao Government will also consider introducing remote working arrangements as part of broader efforts to reduce fuel consumption.
The government spokesperson also warned fuel distributors against exploiting the situation by raising prices arbitrarily or hoarding supplies. If businesses are found to be taking advantage of the situation to increase fuel prices, citizens are encouraged to report such cases through consumer protection hotlines and official online platforms./.
Cambodia increases control of fuel trading
The Cambodian Ministry of Commerce requested fuel distributors and suppliers to instruct units within their networks to strictly manage fuel trading activities in accordance with technical standards, operational procedures and their internal regulations.
