Vientiane (VNA) – The 12th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) has marked a new stage in Laos’ development, setting a long-term strategic vision to 2055 and reaffirming the Party’s leadership in advancing country's renewal and socialist-oriented development.

A press conference announcing the outcomes of the congress, taking place from January 6 to 8, was held in Vientiane on January 9. The event was chaired by Lao Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane and attended by representatives of international organisations, diplomatic missions in Laos, and a large number of Lao and international journalists.

Addressing the press conference, Thongsavanh said that the congress adopted the LPRP's third Political Platform, which is a key document defining the basic direction for the Party’s strategy and vision through to 2055.

The new Political Platform also reviewed the implementation of the second Political Platform, highlighting the LPRP’s leadership in accomplishing the mission of national liberation and laying the foundation for the people’s democratic regime on the path towards socialism. This historical process was divided into three major stages: the Party leading the liberation struggle, the Party leading national defence and construction, and the Party leading the renewal and transformation process.

According to the Lao foreign minister, the congress reviewed and approved the Political Report of the 11th Central Committee of the LPRP, which provided a comprehensive and in-depth assessment of the implementation of the resolutions adopted at the 11th Congress over the past five years. Despite economic and financial challenges, Laos has gradually addressed difficulties and maintained stable socio-economic growth.

The congress also approved the 10th five-year National Socio-Economic Development Plan (2026–2030), which serves as the roadmap for implementing the Resolution of the 12th congress.

Thongsavanh affirmed that the 12th congress was a major socio-political event of Laos, conducted in accordance with the LPRP’s Statutes. It set strategic orientations towards 2055, which coincides with the 100th founding anniversary of the LPRP, with the goal of building Laos into an upper-middle-income developing country with the gap with high-income nations narrowed, the political system strengthened, the economy modernised, and people’s life quality improved.

The Congress elected the 12th Central Committee, comprising 73 official members and 15 alternate members.

At its first plenum, the new Central Committee elected a 13-member Politburo and an 11-member Secretariat. Thongloun Sisoulith was re-elected as General Secretary of the LPRP Central Committee, while General Vilay Lakhamfong was elected Standing Member of the Secretariat and Vanxay Fongsavan Chairman of the LPRP Central Committee's Inspection Commission./.
