Juniors set to become shooting stars

Anh'sfour-year course with the air pistol paid off when she was recruited bythe national youth shooting team earlier this month.

Sheis one of the top eight youngsters from Hai Duong shooting club and hasgained admission to the national training programme.

Theyoungster marked her best achievement last year when she won gold andbronze in the women's air pistol team in National Youth Championship.

"It's my best ever result after three years training at theclub. Shooting has been a favourite sport of my family that we'veinherited from my grandfather, who is a shooting coach," said Vu ThiNgoc Anh.

"My parents weren't interested, but I and myolder sisters followed in our grandfather and uncle's footsteps. I lovethe sport and want to be a coach in future."

"Anh is oneof the top juniors at the club. She often scores 360 points from 40shots in training - the best personal record of a junior," said head ofshooting club Nguyen Van Tai.

The club is now home to 66shooters, of which 13 are member of national senior and junior teams.

However, athletes have rarely trained or competed abroad dueto a lack of funds.

"Shooting is not an exciting sportlike football or volleyball, so, it's hard to promote via the media –the main reason for it struggling to attract sponsorship."

Although the city has a dozens of prosperous enterprises, shooting hasnot received a penny in sponsorship," Tai explained.

Theclub still relies on State funding with 1.1 billion VND (58,000 USD) fortraining and competitions around the year, of which half of the fundspay for ammunition and facilities.

But shooters haveovercome these obstacles to take prizes in numerous world championships.

The club has provided the national team withsharpshooters since it established in 1961.

Nguyen DucUynh set a milestone at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia 1989when he became the first Vietnamese shooter to win a gold medal in themen's quick-fire pistol.

Local shooters then triumphed atthe SEA Games.

Four years ago, Nguyen Van Tung won abronze medal in the men's rifle at the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.

The club's athletes Tran Quoc Cuong and Pham Thi Ha recordedthe best ever result in Vietnamese shooting history at the World Cup inApril when they finished in the world top ten.

Cuongranked fourth and Ha placed ninth in the men's and women's pistol,respectively.

"It's the best ever result for Vietnameseshooters in the world championship. The two best athletes were nurturedat the Hai Duong shooting club," said the national team coach Nguyen ThiNhung.

"The club has provided the national team top formshooters for major event for over two decades," Nhung says.

"We have endeavoured to train and scout out elite athletes from villageshooting clubs in Thanh Ha and Gia Loc districts, which are well-knownfor producing some of the city's best shooters," said the head of club.

Anh dreams of surpassing her uncle Tran Quoc Cuong's resultsin the World Cup.

"My uncle Cuong is my idol. I'll try mybest to beat his record someday and I believe I can do it." Anh said./.
