HCM City (VNA) – Thousands of spectators flocked to Bach Dang Wharf in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 to witness a full-scale rehearsal of an extraordinary drone light show over the Saigon River on the evening of April 28.

A total of 10,500 drones soared into the night sky between 8:30pm 8:45pm, which is also the scheduled time for the official performance on May 1.

The drone show is a highlight of the festivities commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 – 2025).

The show features awe-inspiring visuals that pay tribute to Vietnam’s historic journey toward independence and reunification, iconic scenes such as a tank crashing through the gate of the Independence Palace, the Liberation Flag fluttering triumphantly, and a striking portrait of President Ho Chi Minh.

From as early as 6pm, crowds gathered along Bach Dang Wharf and nearby cafés, rooftops, and high-rise buildings to secure the best vantage points. Families and groups of young people came well-prepared — bringing folding chairs, snacks, drinks, and even binoculars to ensure they wouldn't miss a moment of the aerial spectacle.

"This is my first time seeing a drone show," said Vu Thao Linh Chi, a student from Tan Phu district. "Usually, we only have fireworks during holidays, so I’m really excited to see something this new and creative," she added.

Visitors from across the country also made their way to the southern metropolis.

"I travelled nearly 2,000 kilometres from Bac Ninh just to be here for this grand celebration," shared Nguyen Khac Tuong, who was particularly impressed by the drone formation of a tank entering the Independence Palace.

The organisers have submitted the performance to the Vietnam Record Association for recognition as a national record for the largest number of drones flown simultaneously.

The drone show is part of the broader “Colours of Uncle Ho’s City” festival, which also includes a 3D mapping light show on the façade of Ho Chi Minh City Hall, a fireworks display and music performances on a floating stage at Bach Dang Wharf.

In addition, on the evening of April 30, HCM City will stage fireworks displays at 30 locations from 9pm to 9.15pm. Two high-altitude shows are planned, one at the entrance of the Saigon River Tunnel (Thu Duc City) and another at the Ben Duoc Martyrs Memorial Temple (Cu Chi district), alongside 28 low-altitude firework launching sites across the city./.
