A ceremony was held in Khe Sanh town, Huong Hoa district in the central province of Quang Tri on July 7 to mark the 45 th anniversary of the Khe Sanh victory.
The event was attended by representatives from ministries and central agencies, Quang Tri province and Huong Hoa district, heroic mothers, war veterans and local people.
Addressing the ceremony, Huong Hoa district Party Committee’s Secretary Ho Thi Le Ha reviewed the historical victory, which made her district the first locality in the province and the south totally liberated in 1968.
During 170 days of fierce fighting at Khe Sanh, the armed forces and people had put out of action 11,900 enemies, shot down 480 aircraft of different kinds, destroyed 120 military vehicles, hundreds of artilleries and seized a lot of weapons. The victory on July 9 has become an important landmark in the struggle against the US aggressors.
Forty five years after the battle, Huong Hoa is striving to become a model mountainous district. The district’s average income per capita is 16.5 million VND per year. Its total food output reached 9,969 tonnes last year, increased by 7.6 percent against 2011. Local people’s living standards have improved greatly with strong investment in developing cultural activities, education, and health care.
The same day, at 8 p.m. , another event themed “Khe Sanh 1968 – Vietnam’s strength” will be held at Ta Con airport in the district. It will be broadcast live on VTV1 and VTV4 channels.-VNA
