The southern province of Kien Giang sets a goal of earning 670 million USD from exports in 2014, the provincial Industry and Trade Department has announced.

Of the total, the export of agricultural products is expected to reach 440 million USD, while that of aquatic products is hoped to bring home 175 million USD and other goods will earn 55 million USD.

The province will also strive to ship abroad 1.1 million tonnes of rice next year.

To meet the goal, Kien Giang will keep a close watch on supply-demand and price developments of some key products, the department said.

Besides, the locality will make full use of its advantages and minimise impacts of the economic recession while increasing trade promotion and expanding export markets, especially those with high demands.

Kien Giang will also enhance its market forecast capacity and support local enterprises in promoting production and export as well as improve the competitiveness of its major currency earners such as frozen shrimp and cuttle, and rice, the department added.

Despite numerous difficulties, in 2013, the province earned 663 million USD, exceeding its yearly plan and up 11.3 percent over the previous year. Of which, 410 million USD came from farm produce exports and 158 million USD from seafood sales.

Kien Giang boasts strengths in agriculture and aquatic farming, annually producing 581,000 tonnes of seafood. It also leads the country in rice production with nearly 4.5 million tonnes per year.-VNA
