Lai Chau (VNA) – The Border Guard of the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau has presented 166 scholarships worth a total of 500 million VND (21,500 USD) to poor students in the province’s border localities.
According to Colonel Nguyen Tat Hau, the scholarships are part of a programme launched by the Border Guard High Command to support local disadvantaged children in continuing with their studies.
The programme has called on each border post, unit, and provincial Border Guard Headquarter leader to sponsor at least two students, who will receive 500,000 VND to 1 million VND each month.
Furthermore, the provincial Border Guard Headquarters has mobilised assistance from social organisations and donors both within and outside the province to build classrooms and boarding houses, and buy equipment for students in these areas.
According to the unit, by the end of 2018, the Border Guard force of Vietnam sponsored 2,546 students, with the Border Guard of Lai Chau taking care of 61 students.
Since 2014, the programme has supported the construction of 17 classrooms and five boarding houses for local students, as well as an access bridge with the total cost of 3.9 billion VND, in addition to many studying supplies, playground equipment, and blankets for students in border-area schools.–VNA
