A suspension bridge in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau collapsed on the morning of February 24, leaving 8 dead and at least 40 others injured.

The accident occurred at around 8am in Son Binh commune, Tam Duong district while a funeral procession was crossing from Chu Va 8 to Chu Va 6 village, said Chairman of the communal People’s Committee Vang A Ho.

The wounded are being treated at Tam Duong district general hospital and Lai Chau general hospital.

According to Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Chuong, the overloaded bridge caused a cable to break, sending the victims into the rocky streams below.

The provincial authorities and Red Cross Society offered the families of the dead 6.4 million VND (300 USD) for funeral expense and the injured 3.2 million VND (152 USD) each for medical treatment.

The 1.5 tonne and 54 metre long bridge was reportedly put into use in December 2012./.
