Vientiane (VNA) – Nearly 4 million Lao voters cast their ballots in the election of deputies to the eighth National Assembly (NA) and the provincial People’s Councils on March 20.
In the election, voters in the 18 provinces and cities across Laos will elect 149 NA deputies and 360 others to provincial People’s Councils.
The country’s Constitution, amended in 2015, stipulates for the first time that provincial People’s Councils are set up to consider and approve local decisions while supervising the operations of local organs of power.
The councils are also there to make decisions on local socio-economic development and budget plans, and the appointment and dismissal of provincial governors based on the proposal of the councils’ standing members.
The election started at 7 a.m. and concluded at 5 p.m. the same day.-VNA
