Vientiane (VNA) – Major issues regarding the upcoming election for deputies to the eighth National Assembly and members of the provincial People’s Councils of Laos were released at a press briefing in Vientiane on February 22.
Chairman of the Lao NA Committee for External Relations Kukeo Akkhamonty, who is also a spokesperson for the country’s National Election Committee (CEC), gave requirements for candidates, the number of voters, and preparations for the election on March 20.
Accordingly, an eligible candidate must be more than 21 years old, have good health and professional qualifications, and set a bright example in law enforcement, among others.
The country has nearly 3.99 million citizens of voting age. Of these, over 2 million are women, the official said.
Kukeo Akkhamonty added that the NEC has assigned tasks to each specific agency and set up six sub-committees, including the secretariat and those in charge of political affairs, communications, organisation and personnel, national defence and the budget.
There will be 18 voting areas across the country. From 211 candidates, including 50 women, Lao voters will choose 149 deputies to the eighth NA.
Another 360 people will be selected from 508 candidates to serve People’s Councils in Vientiane and the provinces.-VNA
