A State-level ceremony was held in Ho Chi Minh City on July 10 to celebrate the 100 th birthday of late lawyer and State President Nguyen Huu Tho.

Prominent among participants were National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong; Truong Tan Sang, permanent member of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee; Secretary of the HCM City Party Committee Le Thanh Hai; Vice State President Nguyen Thi Doan, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee (VFFCC) Huynh Dam.

At the ceremony, participants recalled the life and revolutionary career of Nguyen Huu Tho, who used to hold the positions of Acting State President, National Assembly Chairman, President of the VFFCC Presidium, President of the South Vietnam National Front for Liberation’s Central Committee and Head of the Advisory Council of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam .

NA Chairman Trong said celebration of Nguyen Huu Tho’s 100 th birthday is an opportunity for people to review, commemorate, study and follow the example of a great intellectual, an unswerving communist soldier and a leader who devoted his whole life to serve the Fatherland and the people.

In her speech, former Vice State President Nguyen Thi Binh highlighted the activities and contributions of lawyer Nguyen Huu Tho in different periods, especially during the political struggle for people’s welfare and democracy from 1949-1950 and the movement for peace and implementation of the Geneva Accord from 1954-1955, as well as at international forums and during the country’s renewal process.

On behalf of the nation’s lawyers and youths, lawyer Trinh Duc Duy said that while studying the revolutionary example of President Nguyen Huu Tho, the current youth, particularly young lawyers, have constantly learnt to improve professional ethics and professionalism in order to bring laws into the life and speed up judicial reforms, thereby contributing to the country’s renewal and development process.

Comrade Nguyen Huu Tho, alias Ba Nghia, was born on July 10, 1910, in Long Phu village, Long Hung Ha commune, Trung Quan district, Cho Lon province (now Ben Luc town, Long An province).

Having experienced 50 years of revolutionary activities, Nguyen Huu Tho had set a good example about the patriotism and resilient struggle will for independence and freedom of the Fatherland and happiness of the people.

The Party and State conferred the Golden Star Order and other noble orders and medals on the late leader in recognition of his great contributions to the revolutionary cause.

Nguyen Huu Tho was presented with a Joliot Curie Medal by the World Peace Council and an International Lenin Prize and a Friendship Medal for Strengthening Peace among Peoples by the former Soviet Union . He was also honoured with a Medal for Solidarity and Fighting by the Cuban State and the Dimitrov Prize by the Bulgarian State./.
