Law on children protection in spotlight

The draft Law on Protection, Care and Education of Children (revised) was discussed at a seminar in the northern mountainous province of Hoa Binh on April 9-10.

Co-organised by theDepartment of Children Protection and Care under the Ministry of Labour,War Invalids and Social Affairs, and the United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF), the event focused on evaluating Vietnam ’s legal documentsand policies on children’s rights based on international standards.

Participants, including international experts and officials from manyministries, pointed out existing shortcomings and unfeasible contents ofthe legal documents and suggested amendments and supplements to therevised law.

Many opinions said the age level for defining a child in legal terms should increase from the current 16 to 18 years old.

The seminar agreed that the approval of the law has created animportant legal corridor for the protection, care and education ofchildren while promoting the implementation of children’s basic rightsas Vietnam is one of the first countries to ratify the UN Conventionon the Rights of the Child.

However, an array of newissues have emerged during the implementation of the law, prompting theneed to revise it to create a solid and advanced legal corridor forchildren protection and care.-VNA

Modern criminal justice system proposed under revised Criminal Procedure Code

The revised code proposes more progressive procedural rules to enhance adversarial proceedings, tighten power oversight and better protect human and citizens' rights. It will retain effective existing provisions, amend or repeal outdated regulations, and introduce new procedures to expedite case handling, reduce procedural costs and improve efficiency while ensuring fairness, objectivity and greater protection of the lawful rights and interests of organisations and individuals. It also aims to modernise criminal proceedings through the wider application of digital technologies and closer alignment with international practices.

Vietnam, Laos strengthen cooperation on overseas community affairs

The two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in overseas Vietnamese and overseas Lao affairs for the 2026–2030 period, providing a framework for future collaboration. Laos will send a delegation to Vietnam to study preparations for the World Conference of Overseas Vietnamese, scheduled for December 2026.
