Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia Airlines recently began negotiations with Airbus and Boeing for the purchase of 35-40 new long-range jets, according to Peter Bellew, its chief executive.

He added that the restructured Malaysian carrier is interested in Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A330-900neo aircraft to meet current transport needs and to expand operations with flights to Shanghai (China).

The airline also wants to acquire ten second-hand Airbus A330s, he noted.

Malaysian Airlines ordered 50 Boeing B737 MAX airplanes valued at 5.5 billion USD last July.

Malaysia’s national flag carrier has cut 6,000 jobs and reduced 30 percent of its route network after a series of recent air crashes. -VNA
