Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - The Malaysian Cabinet has rejected a proposal by the country’s National Security Council (NSC) to introduce visas for Middle Eastern nationals entering the country, reported “The Star” newspaper.
The newspaper quoted Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz as saying that the decision was made after a thorough discussion at the Cabinet meeting on July 13.
If Malaysia is to accept the NSC’s suggestion, it means the country has to review the entry requirements for all countries, not just those in the Middle East, the minister said.
A review of visa requirements is always bilateral, so Malaysia cannot make a unilateral decision regarding this matter, he added.
Besides, Malaysia has good diplomatic relations with nations in the Middle East, all of which are members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Nazri Aziz said.
He added that Malaysia will tighten screening and checks at entry points to the country in order to ensure security.
Earlier, NSC Secretary Alias Ahmad proposed that the Government consider imposing visa requirements for Middle Eastern nationals, in view of the looming threat of the Islamic State.-VNA
