Can Tho (VNA) – The Military Zone 9 High Command held a get-together on December 22 to celebratethe 40th anniversary of the victory of the Southwest border defencewar (January 7, 1979 - 2019).

The event was attendedby former Politburo member and former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung; formerPolitburo member and former standing member of the Party Central Committee’sSecretariat Le Hong Anh; and a number of leaders and former leaders of theParty, State, Defence Ministry and the Military Zone 9 High Command.

Addressing the event,Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Hoang Thuy, Commander of the Military Zone 9 High Command recalledthat the Military Zone 9 fulfilled the tasks assigned by the Defence Ministry,contributed to crushing the Pol Pot genocidal regime and liberating Cambodianpeople.

He stated that thevictory of the Southwest border defence war is a precious lesson for Vietnam,affirming that the people of Vietnam, with great national solidarity andinternational unity, will foil all schemes and moves of hostile forces andfirmly safeguard the national independence, sovereignty and territorialintegrity.

The victory demonstratedthe noble international spirit and altruistic support of the Party, State andmilitary of Vietnam to Cambodian people, he underscored, adding that with thevictory, the Vietnam-Cambodia ties entered a new period of solidarity,friendship and comprehensive cooperation on the foundation of respect for eachother’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

For his part, formerPrime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said that the armed forces of the Military Zone9 and Mekong Delta localities should continue promoting their glorious traditionand achievements, paying more attention to developing the all-people defenceand modernizing the armed forces, thus staying ready to fight in anycircumstances.-VNA
