Mekong Delta localities are calling for investment in 138 projects with a total investment of about 2.1 billion USD.

The information was released during a press conference on preparations for the 2013 Mekong Delta Economic Cooperation Forum (MDEC – Vinh Long 2013) in Can Tho city on November 18.

The list includes 26 projects valued at more than 6,000 billion VND and 93 million USD registered by Can Tho City and the provinces of Bac Lieu, Ben Tre, Ca Mau, Dong Thap, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Long An, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh and Vinh Long, according to the organising board.

Meanwhile, An Giang, Bac Lieu and Tra Vinh provinces will table four projects worth 1,838 billion VND.

The organising board also said several commercial banks and enterprises will announce their funding for social welfare activities in the Mekong Delta region at the forum, with a total amount of 644 billion VND (30.6 million USD).

MDEC-Vinh Long 2013 will take place from November 25-28 with focus on green economy.

The event, the seventh of its kind, is a joint effort between the Steering Committee for the Southwestern Region, ministries and regional localities.

A series of activities will be organised during the event, including a trade fair and an investment promotion conference chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh. Investment licences are expected to be granted to a number of investors on the occasion of the forum.

The highlight of the event is an exhibition themed “Green environment week – Green technology – Sustainable economic development of green economy” with over 500 booths.

The event, which will see the participation of nine regional cities and provinces, is a chance for the region to introduce its potential and strengths, increasing connectivity among regional localities and between them and Ho Chi Minh City and other regions.

The Mekong Delta region comprises of 12 provinces: An Giang, Bac Lieu, Ben Tre, Ca Mau, Dong Thap, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Long An, Soc Trang, Tien Giang, Tra Vinh and Vinh Long, and one city - Can Tho, with a total area of 40,000 square kilometres and a population of 18 million.
