Mekong Delta urged to restructure agricultural sector

Working with the Southwestern Region Steering Committee(SRSC) in Can Tho city on July 29 on the performance of its tasks in thefirst half of the year and orientations for the second half, Hue saidhe agrees with the committee’s proposed plan to restructure theagricultural sector.

He urged the SRSC to work closely withhis comission in doing this job and setting up specific mechanismsand policies to develop the region, especially Phu Quoc Island, in thecoming time.

Hue also asked the committee, regionalsectors and localities to take measures to solve farmers’ difficulties,saying that they need to further promote agricultural products toconsumers nationwide and carry out programmes to prevent post-harvestloss.

The SRSC also proposed that the commission raisecapital provision for the region’s key projects that are expected tohelp cope with climate change and reduce risks for farmers.

According to the committee’s report, the region saw a stable economicgrowth in the first six months of 2013. However, its agricultural andaquatic production still suffers difficulties as the price of farmingproducts falls and enterprises are unable to access sources of capital.-VNA
