Mexican President Felipe Calderon has hailed Vietnam’s role in the region, particularly in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
President Calderon made the statement at a meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Minh Triet within the framework of the 18th APEC Summit that has just concluded in Yokohama, Japan.
A press release of the Presidential press department said President Calderon invited President Triet to visit Mexico at a convenient time.
He also invited Vietnam to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference slated for late November in Cancun, Mexico, emphasising the significance of ASEAN’s participation in the forum.
Mexico attaches importance to Asia, including Vietnam in its international development strategy, said the press release.
Vietnam and Mexico set up their diplomatic ties in 1975. Two-way trade reached more than 650 million USD in 2009 and is predicted to exceed 1 billion USD in the coming years./.
