Midland’s “Xoan Singing” introduced to foreign diplomats

Deputy ForeignMinister Nguyen Thanh Son, who is also Head of the Vietnam NationalUNESCO Commission, said the traditional folk singing of the northernmidland of Phu Tho will be tabled at the November conference of UNESCOfor consideration to be recognised as intangible world cultural heritageof humanities.

“Hat Xoan” is believed to have been created morethan 500 years ago. It has some similarities with the lullaby. Many ofthe songs are about love, but it is also a kind of folk music thatpraises a village genie.

There are many forms of “Hat Xoan”: duet, group singing accompanied by several kinds of dances.

Xoanfestivals are often held in spring in village temples. On the fifth dayof the first lunar month, the artists often sing it at the Hung Templefestival./.

Rare green sea turtle released back into the wild in Quang Tri

The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), locally known as vich, is a rare and protected species under Vietnamese law. It is also listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a species of conservation concern and is included in the appendices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
