The Electricity Group of Vietnam ’s Power Company No. 2 on August 6 launched a project to bring power to Khmer ethnic minority people in the Mekong delta province of Soc Trang.

The Director of Power Company No. 2, Nguyen Thanh Duy, said the 305.37 billion VND project will help 20,400 Khmer households in the province to have access to electricity.

About 3,200 households of the Kinh and the Hoa in Soc Trang will benefit from the project, Duy said.

The project, approved by the Prime Minister in late 2008, will concentrate on installing new power transmission lines and building other necessary facilities.

According to Duy, when the project is completed in 2011, it will bring the number of Khmer households using power from the national grid from 67.2 percent to 93.3 percent./.
