The north-western border province of Dien Bien on May 21 held a funeral for the remains of six fallen soldiers repatriated by Laos.

They were unidentified Vietnamese soldiers killed on Laos soil on an international mission during the US war of resistance and their remains were recently discovered by a special taskforce in association with the Laos army and local people.

One set of remains was identified as Tran Van Bao, born in 1944, whose family took part in the search and then took his body back to his native province of Bac Giang in the north of the country.

At the funeral, the Deputy Chairwoman of Dien Bien provincial People’s Committee Giang Thi Hoa expressed her gratitude to the Vietnamese volunteers for sacrificing themselves for national independence as well as international friendship.

Those young soldiers devoted their youth and their lives to the sacred aspirations for independence and freedom for both the Vietnamese and Lao peoples, said the local official.

She pledged to boost relations and the special solidarity between the two neighbouring countries.

Dien Bien has received and reburied the remains of 1,414 fallen soldiers repatriated by Laos since 1995, when Vietnam and Laos began to jointly search for Vietnamese soldiers and specialists killed on Lao battlefields./.
