Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a list of selected news summaries reported last weekend by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on January 28 presided over a conference on accelerating the progress of the Quang Trach-Pho Noi power transmission line project in the central province of Thanh Hoa as part of his visit to the project sites, stressing collective efforts to finish the project by mid-2024.

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on January 28 attended a Lunar New Year (Tet) programme and presented gifts to social policy beneficiaries, the poor and disadvantaged workers in the central province of Thanh Hoa.

- The state visit to Vietnam by Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. and his spouse from January 29-30 will be a milestone in the Philippines-Vietnam bilateral relationship and contribute to deepening the relationship between the two countries, said Philippine Ambassador to Vietnam Meynardo Los Banos Montealegre.

Speaking to the media ahead of the visit, the ambassador said that it is the first state visit to Vietnam by President Marcos although he has met Vietnamese officials previously. Read full story

- The upcoming state visit to Vietnam by Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. will create momentum for the bilateral ties in all spheres, Vietnamese Ambassador to the Philippines Lai Thai Binh has affirmed.

In an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) ahead of the visit on January 29-30, the ambassador said Vietnam and the Philippines established diplomatic relations on July 12, 1976, and officially signed an agreement to upgrade their relationship to a strategic partnership on November 17, 2015. Read full story

- Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son and his counterpart from the Republic of Korea (RoK) Cho Tae Yul agreed to continue strengthening trust between the two countries through delegation exchanges at high and all levels, and promoting trade partnership, in their telephone talks on January 26.

- Vietnam and Cambodia on January 28 pledged to provide maximum assistance to Laos to help it successfully perform the role as Chair of ASEAN 2024.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia Sok Chenda Sophea made the pledge at their meeting in Luang Prabang, Laos ahead of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ (AMM) Retreat. Read full story

- During the 35-year journey of foreign direct investment (FDI) attraction, Vietnam has continuously improved institutions and incentives to attract and better manage domestic and foreign investment resources. The expansion of economic diplomacy activities by the Party and Government in recent times has created more opportunities for Vietnam to attract high-quality capital flows into new industries.

In 2023, Vietnam attracted 36.6 billion USD of FDI, an increase of more than 32% over 2022. Of which, newly registered capital reached more than 20 billion USD, up 62.2%; supplemented capital reached nearly 7.9 billion USD, down 22.1%; and the total value of capital contribution by foreign investors was over 8.5 billion USD, up 65.7%. Read full story

- Vietnam had attracted more than 2.36 billion USD in foreign direct investment (FDI) as of January 20, an increase of 40.2% over the same period in 2023, according to the Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

As many as 190 new projects were granted investment registration certificates, a year-on-year rise of 24.2%, with a total registered capital of more than 2 billion USD, 66.9% higher than that of the same period last year. Read full story
