Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a list of selected news summaries reported last night by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a meeting with General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith in Vientiane on October 8, during which he congratulated Laos - Chair of ASEAN in 2024 - on the successful organisation of the bloc’s important events.

PM Chinh, who is in Vientiane to attend the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits, expressed his belief that with its thorough and professional preparations, along with experiences gained during its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2004 and 2016, Laos will successfully host the ASEAN Summits and the 45th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), thereby practically contributing to stable and sustainable development along with growth in the region and promoting its role and position in the international arena. - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on October 8 complimented Star Telecom (Unitel), a joint venture between Vietnam’s Viettel Global JSC and Lao Asia Telecom, on its effective operation over the past 15 years, contributing to socio-economic development and social security in Laos.

Visiting Unitel as part of his ongoing trip to Laos for the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related meetings, PM Chinh asked the firm to continue efforts to carry out its political missions, making contributions to enhancing the Vietnam – Laos special friendship and the comradeship and brotherhood between the two defence ministries in particular. - The 17th “Bui Xuan Phai: For the Love of Hanoi” Awards were presented at a ceremony held at the Temple of Literature in the capital city on October 8, with the Grand Prize honouring architect Hoang Dao Kinh.

Addressing the event, General Director of the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) Vu Viet Trang said the 17th edition of the awards, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the Hanoi Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 - 2024), continues to praise the works, authors, ideas, and efforts in building and preserving the values of the capital city of time-tested culture. - Singapore-based United Overseas Bank (UOB) has revised up its GDP growth forecast for Vietnam by 0.5 percentage point to 6.4% this year from the previous projection of 5.9%.

The revision is to take account of the year-to-date performance and the disruptions to activities in early the fourth quarter caused by Typhoon Yagi, the bank said./. Read full story

Vietnamese, Cambodian PMs advance practical, results-oriented partnership during talks

The Vietnamese and Cambodian PMs agreed to keep shoring up the foundation of political trust and maintain close defence-security ties, pledging not to let hostile forces use either country’s territory to undermine or threaten the security and interests of the other. They vowed to enhance economic connectivity and joint work in culture, education and tourism.

Vietnamese Embassy in Israel urges citizens to enhance safety measures

The Vietnamese Embassy in Israel recommended that Vietnamese nationals regularly follow alerts and instructions issued by the Israeli Home Front Command; install and use the official Home Front Command warning application; and immediately move to a safe room or shelter when air raid sirens sound. They should avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from areas considered unsafe or at risk of unsafety.
