Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a list of selected news summaries reported last night by the Vietnam News Agency.

– Party General Secretary and President To Lam and French President Emmanuel Macron announced the upgrade of relations between the two countries to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during their talks in Paris on October 7 (local time), making France the first country in the European Union (EU) to establish this partnership with Vietnam.

Both sides also aligned on major directions and measures to ensure this partnership deepens and becomes more practical, fitting the new context of Vietnam-France cooperation. Read full story

– Vietnam and France have issued a joint statement on the upgrade of bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership on the occasion of Party General Secretary and State President To Lam’s official visit to France from October 6-7.

Both sides committed to bolstering bilateral ties on the back of mutual respect for international law, equality, sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and political system of each other. They pledged to maintain high-level exchanges and interactions through all channels between the French administration and the Communist Party, Government, National Assembly, and local authorities of Vietnam. – Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Minh Tam has emphasised Vietnam’s tangible and wholehearted contributions to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) over the past time.

In an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency ahead of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related meetings in Vientiane, Laos, from October 8-11, Tam said with the theme “ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience”, the meetings will focus on strategic issues relating to the bloc and the region. – The Ministry of National Defence held a ceremony in Hanoi on October 7 to present decisions of the State President and the Defence Minister to three officers who will assume duties at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).

They include Lieutenant Colonel Vu Thi Kim Oanh and Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Thu, who will respectively serve as a quartermaster and a senior staff officer for training at UNISFA. Meanwhile, Captain Chu Tuan Linh will act as a military observer at UNMISS. Read full story
