Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar's House of Representatives has approved a proposal calling for an end to a sea dyke project in Yangon due to its negative impact on the environment, according to the country’s parliament on June 9.
The proposal of terminating the Botataung jetty project was submitted by U Tin Maung Win, a member of the parliament.
Parliamentarians raised concerns over the potential navigational hazard and possible formation of sand banks due to accumulated silt.
The project had initially won approval from the Myanmar Investment Commission. However, Minister of Transportation and Communication U Thant Sin Maung pointed out that its disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
The parliament overruled the commission's granting of the project under the previous government, calling it unfit and risky.
Myanmar’s parliament recently suspended a private hospital project near the Yangon General Hospital.-VNA
