The Myanmar government and the National Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT) of ethnic armed groups have concluded their fifth round of talks on a nationwide ceasefire with consensus on many issues.
During the three-day talks from August 15-17, the government agreed to the establishment of a federal system guaranteeing the rights of democracy, equality and self-determination. Meanwhile, the armed groups accepted the government’s consistent principles of non-disintegration of the union, non-disintegration of national solidarity and perpetuation of sovereignty.
The two sides agreed to continue talks in September on the remaining points in the ceasefire accord – which could be signed in October.
